A while ago, while reading pumpkin's blog, I came across a very interesting test. "How American are you? "
Since this question had been lingering in my unconsciousness for a while, I got excited and jumped in as quickly as possible with much enthusiasm.
Then I read the questions, and I found myself somehow puzzled, thinking about what is means to be an American. Answering the little questionnaire became secondary.
I honestly do not know who wrote this test, but his or her idea of what defines an American is somewhat funky.
According to this test, to have a perfect score you have to :
- be pro guns
-eat junk food
-think low of Canadians
-prefer light American beer over other kinds
-prefer American cheese over other cheeses
-be uneducated
-be indebted
-think the Iraq war was just the beginning and Iran and Korea should be next
-be proud to be an American
-think America is the best country on earth.
The list is not exhaustive, but you got the idea. In other words, to be utterly American, you pretty much have to be a complete moron.
I don't know about you, but I've seen plenty of Americans who don't have a gun at home, love Guinness, are very educated, and protest the Iraq war. Sheesh If only I had known that those people were less American, I would have certainly looked down upon them. Stupid half Americans!
Why is it that to be an American you have to be a red neck? Same with the French. The good old average French is a "beauf," right?
This view is pretty one-sided, and it is enforced by the media, within the country as well as abroad. That is sad, isn't it?

What is the average French person like, if not how the stereotype is?
I'm curious, and I find it pretty cool how you write posts both in French and English. I'm currently learning French, but I'm still pretty crappy at it. [laughs]
Generalities and stereotypes are sad indeed.
